Wolfson entered three boats for the end-of-term Oriel Regatta: a Senior and Novice mixed VIII and a men’s pair. All put in valiant efforts. The Senior VIII went out in the 2nd round to New College after beating Lincoln in the 1st – there was an exciting moment when a river cruiser forced the two boats to either side of it during the race. The Novice VIII beat Wadham in the 1st round, despite clashing blades at the start, but were not strong enough to catch Mansfield in the 2nd. The men’s pair – Ned Wakeman (stroke) and Carsten Heide (bow) – were racing together for the first time as a pair and did well considering. They had inevitable steering problems but managed to keep Exeter under pressure until the finish – despite a clash with an out-of-control four in the racing lane.
No-one took the failure too hard and most of the crews were to be seen in the Head of the River happily celebrating defeat – such a rare thing these days at WCBC!
